I have this thing about bad smells in my house.(admit it, don't we all) I like my house to either smell like good yummy baking (surprise, surprise) or just cleaned. (if you could buy an air freshner that smelled like bleach I would buy it!) So I decided I wanted to try out these new luminaries that I saw in the grocery store. Although it was a little costly for an air freshning device (around $13) I thought it looked kind of nice and it intriqued me. Well, I got it home and unwrapped it and I LOVED it! It flickers like a candle without being a candle, no fear of burns or burning down the house or smoke for that matter. The "shades" are only a thin piece of paper type product which has been infused with scent. The actual luminary base has nothing to do with the scent it's all in the shade. So as all paper crafters do I thought....this thing has possibilities and then the wheels got turning. Here is what I first worked on. Something for winter.
A cute little polar bear and seal with snowflakes all around them.
This is the second side each side is punched with the wide oval punch and layered with cardstock vellum.
Here are sides 3 and 4. With the flash on my camera you lose the glow of the 'candle". I stamped with the Cold & Cuddly set from the Holiday Mini Catalog. I also added a few rub ons which I now realize were retired but the current Icicle or Merry & Bright rub ons would be just as adorable!
The photo's really do not do this project justice because it needs to be seen in person but trust me it's adorable!
Well, after creating this one which was a little time consuming with all the layering, cutting and punching, I thought I would like more light showing through and I wanted something just as adorable but faster to put together. So I wanted to experiment with just vellum. Oh man did I have fun! Here are a couple of the results.
Another Christmas one using Dasher and clear embossing and then I brayered over it all with Chocolate Chip Classic ink. Wipe with a tissue and voila'! I used Cardstock weight vellum. I recommend that as the shade has to be heavy enough to activate the light when you push it down on the base. I could even see this one with a little glitter on the antlers!
This got me thinking wouldn't this be cute for a baby's nursery? As a nightlight?! Just a nice little glow and this luminary turns itself off after 4 hours. Isn't that clever? It takes 2 AA batteries. So here is my first attempt.
Each side is brayered a different 'baby' color. Green, Blue, Pink and Yellow. Stamped with Nursery Necessities. Cute for a baby boy or girl.
Then I got thinking about my own 'grown' up kids. Here is something they would love! And I was right as soon as I came up from my studio holding it my 19 year old daughter ran over and said "I WANT THAT! I LOVE IT!" Success!!
I stamped with Extreme Guitar and Extreme Elements. I started by brayering it with Bermuda Bay and then stamping the other images directly on the vellum.
The possibilties are really endless. You can stamp names on them. Or put rub on's on the base. Wouldn't this be a great gift if you included a shade for all the holidays! All under $20! I know! BRILLIANT! They are so cute in person. The light flickers randomly inside just like a candle. I keep mine on my kitchen island and that scented shade that it came with, well it's sitting up behind something on my shelf in the front hallway still smelling good.
I am not including the dimensions with this as you will see as soon as you buy one that all you have to do is measure the shade and add 1/4" for overlap. Very easy. Watch for more ideas to come! BTW I keep finding coupons in the Sunday paper for $3.50 or $4.00 off of these. Maybe you can find some too and if you have the coupon and don't really like my idea *GASP* send them my way! I think I will be buying a lot of these this season!
